Using Taskvane

How to turn on CPU sensors, start without a UAC prompt, read power draw correctly, and fix problems.

Turning on CPU temperature and power

Windows only lets programs read CPU temperature, CPU power and drive temperatures when they run as administrator, through a hardware driver. Taskvane uses the signed PawnIO driver, the same one LibreHardwareMonitor uses.

  1. Open Taskvane and click Enable CPU sensors on the Overview page.
  2. Approve the Windows permission prompt (UAC).
  3. Taskvane restarts as administrator, installs PawnIO if it isn't installed yet, and the CPU readings appear within a few seconds.

If you used the installer and kept its CPU sensors options ticked, this is already done. Without administrator mode you still get GPU temperatures, all usage numbers and battery power draw.

Starting as administrator without a prompt

Turn on Settings > Always start as administrator (available while Taskvane is running as administrator). Taskvane registers an elevated scheduled task, which is how monitoring tools like HWiNFO avoid a UAC prompt every time. After that, opening Taskvane normally starts it with administrator rights straight away, including at sign-in if Launch when Windows starts is on.

Turning the setting off, or uninstalling Taskvane, removes the scheduled tasks.

Understanding power readings

  • On battery: the power draw is the whole laptop, measured by the battery itself. It's the most accurate number available, and the time left is based on it.
  • Plugged in: Windows doesn't report whole-system power, so Taskvane shows CPU package power, plus GPU power where the GPU reports it. This is the chip's draw, not the whole PC's, and needs administrator mode.
  • Battery health compares the charge your battery can hold now with its design capacity. Laptop batteries typically lose 10 to 20% in the first few years.

Settings and data

  • Settings and the log live in %APPDATA%\Taskvane. The portable version keeps them in a data folder next to Taskvane.exe.
  • Alerts are set in Settings: CPU and GPU temperature, memory, low battery and sustained CPU load. Each alert repeats at most every 10 minutes.
  • Closing the window keeps Taskvane in the notification area by default, so alerts keep working. Right-click the tray icon and choose Quit to exit.
  • Taskvane makes no network connections and collects no data.

Command line

CommandWhat it does
Taskvane.exe --minimizedStart in the notification area without opening the window.
Taskvane.exe --quitClose the running Taskvane, even one running as administrator, and wait until it has exited. Useful in scripts and installers.
Taskvane.exe --no-elevateStart without handing off to the administrator task, for this launch only.

Troubleshooting

CPU temperature still shows a dash

Check the bottom-left corner of the window says Administrator mode. If it does, open Settings > CPU sensor driver: it should say PawnIO is installed. If it is and readings still don't appear, restart Windows once; a driver update can need a reboot.

The window is blank

Taskvane draws its interface with Microsoft Edge WebView2. Install the WebView2 Runtime and start Taskvane again.

Something else

Open Settings > Sensor engine > Open log, then open an issue on GitHub with the end of the log, your Windows version and your hardware.

Uninstalling

Open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Taskvane and choose Uninstall. This removes the app, its shortcuts and its scheduled tasks; you're asked whether to delete your settings too. PawnIO stays installed because other monitoring tools may use it. Remove it from the same list if you no longer need it. For the portable version, just delete its folder.
